Learn to identify and address risks involved in kinks and scenes in a group workshop for any skill level.
If you’ve attended a couple decent rope workshops, you’ll know that around 30% of the time and teaching effort is dedicated to safety. Where can you place rope on the body with lower injury risk? How do you keep your rope safe to use? What do you do if everything goes wrong?
That level of in-depth risk management is great to have in your toolbox for rope. But what about other kinks? Scenes that combine different activities? Playing in new places, with new people, or in different conditions?
In this workshop, we’ll dive into topics around risk management in kink:
- Identifying risks in new kinks & planned scenes
- Which risks matter?
- Finding ways to lower/mitigate them
- Making a plan for if things go wrong
- Risk negotiation
- Whose job is all of this, anyway?
You’ll come away with a better sense of what risks matter, and a toolbox of skills for keeping yourself and your partners safe(r) in your kink practices. You’ll also meet some like-minded queers!
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is open to LGBTQIA+ people aged 18+ with any level of kink experience and interest. All that’s required is curiosity about identifying, evaluating, and managing risk in kink.
The Pillow Talk Series is specifically aimed at queer folks wanting to make new connections. You’re welcome to come alone, or with friends, but the event series encourages you to mingle & get to know others, too!
Additional notes
- COVID & flu safety Please come tested, wear a mask if you may have been exposed to COVID, and skip the event if you are experiencing cold or flu symptoms. Let's care for each other's health and be considerate towards those with compromised immune systems and disabilities (such as your facilitator).
- Psychological safety Discussing kink can bring up different emotions. If there’s any workshop content that’s too much for you at the moment—for any reason—you’re welcome to quietly step out and rejoin the group later.
- Accessibility The café is a ground-floor venue. Entryways are wide and generally flat, but due to the historic nature of the building, not all surfaces are easy to navigate with mobility aids. There is a gender-neutral restroom, but no barrier-free bathrooms. Expect moderate lighting (no flashing lights) and soft background music. For further info, you can get in touch with the café directly via Instagram or their website.

Your facilitator: Rey Danes
Rey is queer and non-binary, and has been in the kink scene for over a decade. They are a nerd about their favorite kinks, and love discussing scene-building strategies, techniques, and safety practices.
They see huge value in community knowledge-sharing, and they have mentored friends learning safe(r) kink practices for years—which is what inspired them to host public workshops and social gatherings.
They’re half of Tied Together: affirming and inclusive support for individuals, couples, and larger relationship constellations.
About the venue: Regenbogencafé
Located in Reichenberger Kiez, Regenbogencafé is a place for all sorts of neighborhood get-togethers and political networking in Kreuzberg. As part of Regenbogenfabrik, they host a wide mix of events: film screenings, punk rock readings, game nights, and art exhibitions.
Donated proceeds let the café support various projects: struggles for the right to remain, queer initiatives, and internationalist social movements.
Every Monday, the café hosts the Pillow Talk Series, a queer living room for storytelling, playing, crafting, music, and connection. Each week has a different theme, and we were kindly invited to participate in this one!
